Legendary broadcast journalist and author Andy Rooney has passed away at the age of 92.
Rooney was best known for the curmudgeonly editorials he did at the end of each episode of CBS staple Sixty Minutes every Sunday evening for over thirty-three years. He was famous for being a bit grumpy as well as being tight with his money and for not suffering fools lightly.
Rooney retired from his longtime job with Sixty Minutes at the beginning of October. CBS news said in an official statement that "Mr. Rooney died from complications due to surgery" after he was hospitalized for an undisclosed procedure.
Rooney's outspoken ways often got him into trouble, and he was famously reprimanded in the early-90s after making a series of derogatory comments toward gays and African Americans, for which he later-perhaps begrudgingly-apologized. Not one to mince his words, he was nominated for multiple Emmy Awards and took home three trophies.
His "A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney" segments were often not about politics or major news items, but rather about the mundane or his observations on life and what he saw around him. It was also his opportunity to complain about something that bothered him, and lots of things bothered him! Before joining the prestigious program, Rooney had a long and storied career in journalism, as he traveled the globe reporting during wartime and peace.
I think Andy is happy that he's no longer retired, as he was never a person to rest on his laurels. May you rest in peace, Mr. Rooney...
