Dallas Star Larry Hagman Dead at 81

DALLAS:FIRST & SECOND SEASONS BY DALLAS (DVD) [5 DISCS] (Google Affiliate Ad)

Actor Larry Hagman has passed away after a battle with throat cancer at the age of 81.

Hagman starred in two of the most enduring and popular television series of all time. He got his first big break starring as astronaut Major Anthony Nelson in the popular 1960s sitcom I Dream of Jeannie co-starring Barbara Eden as the beautiful Genie with magical powers, who was always creating trouble for the master of her dreams. The show has become one of the most iconic sitcoms of the era and has been in syndication for the past five decades.

Hagman entrenched his icon status with the role of the incredibly devious JR Ewing on the prime time hit soap opera Dallas, centered around the machinations of the oil baron at the family homestead "Southfork" and his relationships with family, friends and especially his enemies.  The famous "Who Shot JR?" episode remains one of the most watched television programs of all time, as almost one hundred million Americans tuned in to see the dastardly JR receive his comeuppance. The show was a global phenomenon, watched in over one hundred countries and making Hagman a household name worldwide.

The show was so popular that cable network TNT decided to resurrect the Ewing clan for an updated version of the series, Dallas: The Next Generation, which debuted last season to good reviews and solid ratings.

Hagman was born into show biz royalty. His mother was the beloved actress of stage and film Mary Martin, who originated the role of Peter Pan in the smash hit Broadway musical. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Maj, his son Preston, daughter Heidi and five grandchildren. He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death, including co-star Linda Gray, who played JR's long-suffering wife Sue Ellen, as well as Patrick Duffy, who played JR's angelic brother Bobby.

TNT said in a statement: 'All of us at TNT are deeply saddened at the news of Larry Hagman's passing. He was a wonderful human being and an extremely gifted actor.
'We will be forever thankful that a whole new generation of people got to know and appreciate Larry through his performance as J.R. Ewing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.

Here's the Story: CBS Green Lights Brady Bunch Reboot

CBS has given a green light to a reboot of the classic 70s sitcom The Brady Bunch.

The original series ran on the ABC network from 1969-1974, and featured actor Robert Reed as Mike Brady, a widowed architect with three young sons who marries Carol (Florence Henderson), who has three young daughters. Feisty maid Alice was also an integral part of the family.

The updated version will focus on one of the original characters, Bobby Brady, who will be a divorced father with children who marries a divorced mother with children as well. The series will be set in contemporary times and tackle current, relevant family issues.

Lloyd Schwartz, the son of the original series' creator Sherwood Schwartz, will serve as the show's executive producer along with Vince Vaughn and A Christmas Story actor Peter Billingsley. As of now, no casting decisions have been announced.

The original series has been in continuous syndication since its initial run, and has become a pop culture icon over the decades. The series also inspired two popular big screen versions during the 1990s, as well as various reunion specials featuring the Brady clan.

Iconic 60 Minutes Reporter Mike Wallace Dead at 93

Legendary broadcaster and 60 Minutes reporter Mike Wallace has died at the age of 93, a spokesperson has revealed.

Wallace died Saturday night, CBS network spokesman Kevin Tedesco said. On Face the Nation this morning host Bob Schieffer  said Wallace passed away at a care facility in New Haven, Connecticut, where he had been living for the past several years.

Famous for his often aggressive form of interviewing, he was a familiar part of the journalism scene for almost seventy years. He interviewed countless politicians and celebrities over the decades,  and once famously asked the deceased Iranian religious leader the Ayatollah Khamenei if he "was crazy". He also brought superstar singer Barbra Streisand to tears during an interview, criticizing her for being "totally self-absorbed" and for her years of psycho-analysis.

He was one of the original reporters hired to host an ensemble news show titled 60 Minutes in 1968. The show would go on to become a Top 10 ratings staple for several decades, and was still rated in the Top 15 as of last year. He continued reporting for the hard-hitting news program until he announced his retirement in 2006, a year after undergoing delicate heart surgery.

Wallace received 21 Emmy awards during his long, storied career, as well as five DuPont-Columbia journalism awards and five presitious Peabody awards.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Mary Yates Wallace, his son, Chris, a stepdaughter, Pauline Dora, and stepson Eames Yates.

Heeerrre's David: Letterman Surpasses Johnny Carson As King of Late Night Tenure

CBS announced that they have renewed David Letterman's contract to keep his late night talk show on the air through 2014.

The affable host began his talk show tenure when The Late Show with David Letterman debuted on NBC in 1982 and ran on the Peacock Network until 1993. CBS picked up the show the same year, where Letterman has been at home ever since.

Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show for thirty years, from 1962 until he decided to retire from the show business arena in 1992, opting to go out on a note of class, which he always embodied.

"David Letterman is a late-night legend with an iconic show," said CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler in making the announcement that the show would continue with the network for the next two years. Letterman, who will turn 65 next week, has won nine Emmy Awards for his late night staple, where he charms celebrity guests and audience members alike with his smooth charm and quick wit.

Misery & Company: Kathy Bates to Play Charlie Harper on Two & a Half Men

It seems Chuck Loree and the producers of Two & A Half Men over at CBS are still trying to mine nuggets of humor out of their on-going feud with axed actor Charlie Sheen!

The network announced yesterday that Academy-Award winning actress Kathy Bates will make a cameo appearance on the hit sitcom, appearing as the ghost of Sheen's character Charlie Harper. After Sheen was fired from the series following a long episode of erratic and freakishly odd behavior, the producers decided to off his alter ego on the show by having his obsessed stalker Rose push him in front of a Paris Metro train in the season premiere. That 70s Show actor Ashton Kutcher was brought onto the canvas as a replacement for the troubled star.

Bates will appear to Charlie's brother Alan (played by Jon Cryer) after his character has a mild heart attack and ends up in the hospital. Bates will no doubt steal any scene that she is in! The episode is set to air on April 30.

See Cathi Fall (Repeatedly): Tonight's The Amazing Race

As a reminder for everyone to watch tonight's episode of The Amazing Race, I thought I would post this totally hypnotic gif of the show's Cathi hitting the ground hard...over and over again...in tonight's episode. Cathi and her husband Bill, the oldest contestants on the current season, survived elimination in the debut episode after arriving in last due to it being a non-elimination round. They redeemed themselves in last week's episode by crossing the finish line at the Pit Stop in 7th place, avoiding the Double Elimination host Phil Keoghan warned everyone about! Tonight's episode sees the remaining teams in an Indonesian field, a place Cathi & Bill should be more comfortable in, seeing as they run a farm in Oregon. Don't miss tonight's episode on CBS (barring any delays!) @ 8:00 PM on CBS:
