Clean Up Your Room, Kid: Teen Finds Winning Lottery Ticket in Messy Bedroom

A teenager in Scotland is glad that he finally relented to cleaning up his bedroom after his mother nagged him about the mess after finding a winning lottery ticket!

19-year-old Ryan Kitching from Midlothian, Scotland, wasn't overly-excited to tackle his messy bedroom, but did so at the urging of his tired, put-upon Mum. The Scottish lad eventually uncovered twelve old lottery tickets buried somewhere beneath the messy pile of dirty underwear and smelly socks. At first, Ryan thought that the tickets weren't any good and he considered tossing them into the rubbish with the other junk he planned on throwing away. On second consideration, an inner-voice told him to take a closer took and check out the numbers. He's delighted he did, as it turns out one of the tickets DID have a winning number, and now he is some $80,000 richer!

"I am totally speechless — it was the happiest day of my life easily. Next time she nags me to tidy my room I won’t need telling twice,” Ryan elatedly told local press.

Kitching plans to use some of his new-found funds to send the 'rents on vacation, as well as helping his baby brother to buy a new set of wheels. He has decided, however, not to use the money to get his own place. " I don’t want to move out just yet. I still get my tea cooked here."

D'Oh: Scottish Couple Unearth 800-Year-Old Stone Carving...of Homer Simpson

 

Rosalind and Donald McIntyre of Fife, Scotland, found an amazing object while pottering around in their garden earlier this year: an 800-year-old stone head carving with more than a passing resemblance to cartoon character Homer Simpson!

Startled and more than a little curious about the intriguing discovery, Mrs. McIntyre took the object to the St. Andrew's Museum so the staff and curators could give their opinion of what it might be.  They held a meeting last week to try to shed more light on the discovery, but at the moment they remain 'completely baffled' as to the exact nature of the carving.

Mrs McIntyre believes it could be a gargoyle head from a former church in the area built in the 1200s. "We have had a lot of people saying how much it looks like Homer - it’s quite funny really. I think it is the shape of his head,"she says. "We looked all over the Internet looking for it. The most similar thing that we could find was a type of gargoyle that we saw in Peru, but we are a long way from Peru, so I have no idea what it could be."

Of course, looking like Homer Simpson is bound to exact a heavy burden on the person whom the statue was modeled upon all of those years ago. "There is no other word to describe it other than ugly, but we have become quite attached to it. He sits on the kitchen window now, and when we have people over they always comment on it," she reveals.

I wonder if somewhere in that garden, there isn't another statue head of a female, with an amazing, five-foot tall blue-rinse beehive hairdo and a string of pearls...

From Bikinis to Parkas: 1st Snow Falls on Scotland Days after Record October Warmth

The first snow of "winter" has fallen in the UK on Thursday - remarkably, just a few days after the hottest October day ever recorded.

Snow coated mountains were visible across the Scottish Highlands on Thursday as an Arctic storm caused foot-high drifts, near hurricane-force 70mph winds and an 18C temperature plunge - with ski resorts planning to open in just five weeks.

Cairngorm reported two inches and foot-high drifts, with the white stuff also coating Glencoe, Glenshee and on the Nevis Range.

Overnight temperatures on Wednesday dropped to a bitter 1C at Cairnwell, Grampians, and more snow is due on another chilly night on Thursday, with frost in sheltered parts of northern England and Scotland.

The latest weather warnings come just a few days after the UK basked in all-time record heat for the month of October!
