Hurricane Sandy Could Be Nightmare Before Halloween

Edit: The NOAA has projected the path of the massive storm to turn inland at Delaware and going far inland, passing directly over Washington, DC, before turning north to pass over Philadelphia, New Jersey as well as New York City. Keep in mind this is still an early projection and the storm [hopefully] will alter its course:

Residents of the US East Coast are keeping their fingers crossed and hoping that Hurricane Sandy doesn't turn into the "Nightmare Before Halloween" super-storm  (dubbed "Frankenstorm" due to the potential for a hybrid cyclone) that many forecast models are currently predicting.

Hurricane Sandy pounded Jamaica yesterday as a strong Category 2 storm, killing at least two people, bringing torrential rain, high winds and a dangerous storm surge to the Caribbean island nation. More than 70% of the island's population are currently without power or essential services. The storm quickly made its way to nearby Cuba, where it is currently battering the eastern part of the island.

Many of the current forecast models for the projected path of the storm have the monster skirting the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, with possible multiple landfalls anywhere from Virginia to Long Island, New York. The most current forecast models have meteorologists deeply concerned that the storm will collide with an early winter storm now forming in the West, and a strong blast of arctic air from Canada that would create a "Perfect Storm" scenario, referring to the monster Nor'Easter that did hundreds of millions of dollars in damages along the US East Coast in 1991 and was the basis of the bestselling book by Sebastian Junger and the movie of the same name starring George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg.

 The "Perfect Storm" is  likely to hit during a full moon when tides are near their highest, increasing the chances of severe coastal flooding the NOAA has warned. With many trees still with leaves and the potential for snow, power outages caused by falling trees could last through to Election Day, some meteorologists fear. Some are saying this storm has all the earmarks of a billion-dollar nightmare for the coast.

People living along the entire Eastern Seaboard are being urged to have emergency plans in place, should the storm strengthen and become a severe threat. Evacuation orders should be taken seriously, and citizens are asked to check on elderly or sick relatives.

Some forecast models have the storm skirting the US coast before heading out to sea. Let's hope that is what happens with this storm...

Fuh-Get 'Bout It: Jersey Shore Could Be Underwater in 20 Years

The Guidos and Guidettes of MTV's "reality" series staple The Jersey Shore may have to find a new location to be annoying and inconsequential according to a new climate change study conducted by prestigious Princeton University.

The study reveals that runaway climate change is rapidly altering the stability of our planet, creating continuous outbreaks of catastrophic storms such as hurricanes and cyclones as the risk of devastating floods is also on the rise. The study suggests by as early as 2030, the risk of "once in a century" type storms and flooding will increase by at least twenty percent. Large parts of the New Jersey shore line will be in serious jeopardy of being inundated by massive storm surges from increasingly more common and powerful "mega-storms".

The rising sea levels could decimate many low-lying areas up and down the entire Eastern Seaboard of the US, displacing millions of residents, closing businesses, shutting down essential industry and costing the economy hundreds of billions of dollars, if not more. Entire cities and towns would have to relocate to higher ground, and important infrastructure would have to be rebuilt.

The study concludes that by the end of the century, sea levels will be on the average four to five feet higher than current levels. So, Jersey Shore crew, you may want to be on the hunt for a location with a higher elevation to spend your "Golden Years". May I suggest the Himalayas?

Return of the Birds: New Jersey Town Invaded by Seagulls

A town in New Jersey is living through a real-life version of Alfred Hitchcock's classic horror film The Birds. 

Thousands of squawking seagulls have invaded a townhouse complex in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. The flying menaces have become such a nuisance, that parents are having their children walk outdoors beneath umbrellas as to avoid being splattered by falling cascades of bird droppings.

Township Mayor Michael Skudera believes than an experiment using falcons at a nearby landfill might have frightened the seagulls to move less than a quarter of a mile away and start roosting in a housing complex located within the township. The county has suspended the falcon program within the past week, but any difference in the bird plague has been negligible.


Rooftops in the Fox Chase housing development are splotched white from tons of bird doo, small animal bones litter backyard patios, feathers are everywhere and children who use the equipment in the playground end up with nasty, white residue on their clothes.

If Melanie Griffith's mother Tippi Hendren moves into the neighborhood, I'd be making a fast break out of town...

 

Blue Light Special: K-Mart Thief Dances His Way to Jail

A dance-happy thief was caught on camera getting his groove on while merrily shoplifting women's clothing at a K-Mart department store in Gloucester Township, New Jersey. The twinkle-toed thief was seen on surveillance video shaking his groove thing as he went about stuffing a variety of female garments, including a red party dress, beneath his tee shirt and into the crotch of his shorts!

The Baryshnikov protegee made good use of being light on his feet when confronted by store security, as he did a little jeté to avoid being carted away to jail, where he would be very popular on Dance Night! He's still at large and probably practicing his moves while playing Just Dance on Wii at this very moment...wearing that sexy red party dress.
