The world is no secret to strange beauty treatments (kitty litter face scrubs, bird poop facials...) and now comes the latest beauty trick that is all the rage in Japan (where else?)... slimy snail treatments.
An exclusive salon in Tokyo has been charging a pretty yen for the privilege of allowing the
creepy crawlies to slither around their clientele’s pampered faces... all in the name of
beauty. Apparently, the slime the snails secrete contains an anti-wrinkle
ingredient. According to The Telegraph
UK:
"The secreted snail mucus is key to the facial, as it
reportedly contains a beauty-boosting cocktail of proteins, antioxidants and
hyaluronic acid, which help skin retain moisture, reduce inflammation and
remove dead skin."
Indeed, the anti-inflammatory nature of the snail mucus was
known centuries ago by certain indigenous South American tribes, but having
snails crawl around one’s face? What is involved in that bird poop beauty
treatment again?
